Cape Town Wine Co, Sauvignon Blanc, Cape Town WO, 2022

Dutch pioneer Meldt van der Spuy arrived in Cape Town in 1707 only to fall in love with the city’s majestic vineyards and mountains by the sea. Having obtained one of four Cape Town liquor licenses at the time, Meldt made a fortune trading in the finest Cape Town wines. The Van der Spui family continues the tradition of their glorious ancestor with the Cape Town Wine Co line of wines, thus paying tribute to Meldt’s heritage and love of fine food and wine.

Cape Town Wine Co, Sauvignon Blanc is a vibrant Cape Town Sauvignon Blanc, a true expression of the Cape Town WO terroir. The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand, separated from the stalks and gently pressed. The juice is allowed to stand for 24 hours, after which yeast specially selected to enhance the fruitiness is added. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 14-16 C. After fermentation, the wine is aged on fine lees for about 3 months. Regular batonage helps round out the palate and makes it exquisitely smooth. Wine is recommended to drink young, within 2 years after bottling.

Bud opening in 2021 in South Africa was 5-7 days late compared to the previous year, resulting in later flowering and the start of the growing cycle. Rain and cold weather in early November had a positive effect on the vines. Cool summer conditions favored slow and even ripening. Grapes reached phenolic ripeness 3-4 weeks later than usual. These factors contributed to the production of more juicy and concentrated berries with high acidity.
