Wine “Conde de Farnals” Gran Reserva, Valdepenas DO, 2014

“Conde de Farnals” Gran Reserva – exquisite dry red wine made from Tempranillo grapes grown in the company’s vineyards in Valdepeas. The Valdepeas region has a continental climate with low rainfall. The soils are mainly composed of limestone, sandy loam and clay. The high lime content contributes to good moisture retention, which is very important in hot and dry conditions in the region. The vineyards on the mountain slopes are protected from the winds and produce consistently high quality harvests. After the harvest, which is carried out at the time of optimal ripeness of the berries, the grapes undergo the traditional vinification for red wines, which takes place at a controlled temperature. Then the wine is aged in oak barrels for 18 months. The wine will perfectly complement fried red meat, game and cheeses.

Bodegas Fernando Castro was founded in 1850 when Marcos Castro Torres opened a small business in the field of viticulture. His son Juan Manuel, with the support of his eight children, was able to give a good commercial impetus to the company. So Castro wines began to be sold in the markets of Andalusia and Madrid. Then it presented some difficulty – for 15-20 days the wine was transported on carts drawn by mules. But the Castro family was able to lead the company to prosperity, despite all the vicissitudes of fate that they had to endure during the Spanish Civil War.
Today Fernando Castro is the most famous family winery in southern Spain. Castro wines are exported to 46 European countries, as well as the USA, Canada and Japan. In Bodegas, Fernando Castro was able to combine traditional methods with the latest technology, which guarantees the excellent quality of the wines produced. The company currently owns 240 hectares of vineyards, which grow varieties such as Tempranillo, Ayren, Syrah, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
