Wine Haskell, “Dombeya” Fenix, 2020

“Dombeya” Fenix is a red dry wine made from a blend of three varieties of grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, collected in the early morning hours. Earlier this wine was issued under the name “Altus”, but since 2009 it was renamed into “Phoenix”. The change of name did not affect the taste of the wine. It is still fragrant, with bright notes of fruits, black berries, soft tannins and light spiciness.

Harvesting is done manually, at the winery the berries are fermented at a controlled temperature of 12 C for 15 days. Malotactic fermentation is carried out in new barrels from French oak (40%) and in barrels of the second and third use. The wine lasts 12 months in oak barrels.

The main line of Haskell wines is called “Dombeya” . These wines are primarily a benchmark in terms of “price-quality.” The wine list perfectly reveals the potential of Haskell in creating modern in style, but retaining its vivid individuality of wines. “Dombeya” is a sort of wild pear that is common in the area. Initially, the so-called estate. In the first year of its work, Haskell received 5 stars from the “John Platter Guide”. In South Africa, it was the first winery, which in 2009 was able to win the prestigious competition “Tri-Nations Challenge”, ahead of the best wines from New Zealand and Australia. Wine “Pillars” in 2007 received three awards at this contest: “The best wine of the exhibition”, “The best wine from Syrah”, “The best red wine”. And the wine “Dombeya” Chardonnay in 2004 was able to get 4 stars from the leading South African wine critic John Platter. Today, Haskell is going to bring out wines from the Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to the level of world-class wines.
