Le Terre di Mandorlaia, “Carbonile” Morellino di Scansano DOCG is a charming dry red wine created by master winemakers from Sangiovese grapes grown in the estate’s vineyards in the Morellino di Scansano area at an altitude of about 150 meters above sea level. The harvest is carried out when the berries reach the optimum level of ripeness. At the winery, the fruits undergo fermentation at a temperature of 28-29 C in steel tanks. Maceration on the skins is carried out with strict temperature control and lasts 14 days. The wine is aged for 6-8 months in stainless steel tanks, and then for a short time in bottles in the winery’s cellars.
The Cusona estate, which belongs to the Guicciardini Strozzi company, is located on the banks of the Elsa River and lies on the route from Paris to Rome. The first mention of the Cusona estate in historical sources dates back to 994, as a farm of the Bibbiano family.
In the first decades of the 15th century, the Bardi family, who owned the estate at that time, were already cultivating vines on the Cusona estate, producing wine from the Vernaccia variety. A century later, Girolamo Guicciardini, being a count, married the daughter of the Bardi family. In addition to a happy marriage, he received the Cusona estate at his disposal, which from that moment on irrevocably belonged to the Guicciardini family, who for centuries took care of their vineyards, which later brought them worldwide fame. The wines of the Cusona estate were once honored by the pen of Dante and flattering reviews of the great Michelangelo.
A significant contribution was made by Francesco Guicciardini (Minister of Agriculture), who took care of the estate for three years, starting in 1906. The history of the Strozzi and Guicciardini families is often rightly linked to the Renaissance. The proof of the validity of this statement is the most beautiful architectural creation – the Strozzi Palace and the historically proven connection of this family with the Medici family.
